Estados UnidosUnited States.

Between January 28 and February 4, 2023, a high-altitude Chinese-origin balloon overflew the continental United States from Alaska, passing over nuclear installations in Montana (Malmstrom Air Force Base, Minuteman III silos), descending southeast until shot down on February 4 by an AIM-9X Sidewinder missile launched by an F-22 Raptor at 60,000 feet over the Atlantic coast of South Carolina. The Biden administration and DoD officially confirmed it was an intelligence platform (SIGINT/PHOTINT). Partial recovery of mechanical, electronic and payload parts was executed by the U.S. Navy (USS Carter Hall, USS Oscar Austin) and the FBI for analysis. It is the corpus's first case of officially confirmed adversary technology operating over the continental United States in the post-2017 UAP cycle, and opens the adversary-technology narrative with the strongest possible evidential basis.

Strong evidence: instrumental sensor record + multiple witnesses (typically military). Three independent axes: the «tier» measures the strength of the evidence; the «probability» estimates how genuinely unexplained the case is —a natural phenomenon can remain unexplained, so it does not equal «non-prosaic»—; and the partition of explanations (below) says what it most plausibly was. So a well-documented case can have a possible hoax as its most plausible cause, and a Tier B is not, for that reason, a hoax.

On January 28, 2023, NORAD first detected the presence of an unidentified high-altitude object entering U.S. airspace through the Aleutian Islands (Alaska). The object was tracked for five days as it followed a trajectory over Canadian territory, entering the continental U.S. through Idaho, overflying northern Montana —including the Minuteman III silo complex administered by Malmstrom Air Force Base's 341st Missile Wing— and descending diagonally to the southeast through Wyoming, Nebraska, Kansas, Missouri, North Carolina and finally the South Carolina coast.

The Biden administration and Department of Defense chose not to shoot down the balloon over land due to risk to civilian populations given its size (the balloon was approximately 27 meters —about 90 feet— in diameter, with a payload the size of three school buses and a total height close to 60 meters). On February 1, F-22 fighters were scrambled from Nellis AFB (Nevada) while command considered downing it over Montana, an option ruled out due to the ground risk. On February 4 at 14:39 ET, an F-22 Raptor from the 1st Fighter Wing (Joint Base Langley-Eustis, Virginia) fired a single AIM-9X Sidewinder missile from about 58,000 feet at the balloon, which was operating between 60,000 and 65,000 feet over the Atlantic, shooting it down about 6 nautical miles off the coast of Surfside Beach (South Carolina). It was the first confirmed air-to-air kill in the history of the F-22. The wreckage spread over a debris field of 7 to 11 miles in shallow waters about 14 to 17 meters deep. Recovery was coordinated by the FBI with naval support from USS Carter Hall (LSD-50) and USS Oscar Austin (DDG-79), and the components were processed at the FBI laboratory in Quantico, Virginia.

At the February 4 Pentagon press conference, Secretary of Defense Lloyd Austin and General Mark Milley officially confirmed that the balloon was a Chinese-origin intelligence platform. The Chinese government partially acknowledged the incident by characterizing the balloon as a 'civilian meteorological research platform deviated by winds', an explanation the DoD rejected citing the presence of SIGINT antennas, high-capacity solar panels and controllable trajectory. In the following weeks, AARO and the DoD admitted that this balloon was part of a historical series of Chinese balloons over U.S. territory that had been initially categorized as UAP in previous years —including four overflights confirmed retroactively under the Trump and Biden administrations— that had not been detected or publicly reported. Three additional balloons of unconfirmed origin were shot down in subsequent days over Alaska, Yukon, and Lake Huron.

It is the corpus's anchor case for the adversary-technology narrative. Few UAP cases have a comparable degree of official confirmation: public statement from the Secretary of Defense, physical wreckage recovery, FBI analysis at Quantico, SIGINT antenna identification, and the DoD's subsequent acknowledgment of a historical series of prior overflights categorized as UAP. Its structural importance is twofold. First, it **empirically validates the 'adversary technology' category** which the UAP debate had kept as a speculative hypothesis until this case. Second, it **retroactively rewrites the prior UAP record**: if AARO admits that four UAPs from earlier years were in fact undetected Chinese balloons, that recalibrates the entire corpus —any unidentified high-altitude UAP between 2018 and 2023 must now be considered potentially adversarial before being considered anomalous. The connection to Lake Huron 2023 (shot down three days later, never officially identified) is direct: the reasonable presumption is adversarial, not anomalous, unless proven otherwise.

This case is classified among the model's hypotheses: the bar splits 100% by how much each explanation weighs (the uncertainty is spread across the hypotheses the case supports). Summed across the corpus they produce the comparable partition. It is a different question from the Probability above: that one estimates how likely the case is a genuinely unexplained phenomenon; this one splits which the explanation would be.
