Chuck Rak

Art student · the fourth member of the Allagash group, and the one who in 2016 admitted the abduction part of the account was invented

Biography

He shared the canoe, the campsite, and the fifteen regression hypnosis sessions with the Weiner twins and Charlie Foltz, and for four decades his account under hypnosis was part of the 'concordant fourfold testimony' that made the case famous. In 2016 he broke that concordance: he admitted in an interview that the abduction part had been invented and that he simply went along with the group's story. He did not recant the non-hypnotic core —a light over the lake, a campfire more burned down than expected—, only the content that emerged later, under hypnosis. His turn does not prove the other three are lying, but it is the piece the corpus itself uses to show the limits of hypnotically recovered memory in a group that lived through the same ambiguous event and underwent the same process together.

The Allagash Abductions· 1976

In August 1976, four art students —twins Jack and Jim Weiner, Charlie Foltz and Chuck Rak— were camping at Eagle Lake, in Maine's Allagash wilderness. They reported a large luminous sphere, a beam of light and a missing-time episode; years later, under fifteen hypnosis sessions, the four separately described an abduction and an examination. The case became an abduction classic — until in 2016 one of them, Chuck Rak, admitted the abduction part was made up.
