En al menos una de las imágenes aparece, además del objeto, un caza militar a poca distancia.
Los testigos entregaron las copias y los negativos originales a un periódico escocés (el Daily Record), que a su vez los remitió al Ministerio de Defensa (MoD). Los originales se 'extraviaron' y la historia nunca se publicó. Durante más de tres décadas las fotografías estuvieron fuera del alcance público, pese a ser consideradas por varios investigadores entre las mejores jamás tomadas del fenómeno.
Tras trece años de investigación, el académico y ex curador de los National Archives David Clarke localizó al ex oficial de prensa de la RAF Craig Lindsay, quien había conservado una copia del último positivo original. On the evening of 4 August 1990, two men walking on the moors above the hamlet of Calvine, in Perthshire (Scotland), observed a large diamond-shaped object hovering silently in the sky. They took shelter under some trees and, from there, shot a series of about six photographs while the object held station and then ascended vertically out of view. In at least one of the images, alongside the object, a military jet appears nearby.
The witnesses handed the prints and original negatives to a Scottish newspaper (the Daily Record), which in turn passed them to the Ministry of Defence (MoD). The originals were 'misplaced' and the story was never published. For more than three decades the photographs were beyond public reach, despite being regarded by several researchers as among the best ever taken of the phenomenon.
After thirteen years of research, academic and former National Archives curator David Clarke located former RAF press officer Craig Lindsay, who had kept a copy of the last original print. In May 2022 Lindsay showed him the photograph, the envelope and the photocopies he had once faxed to the MoD. The image was made public in 2022. A photographic analysis by Andrew Robinson (Sheffield Hallam) found no signs of manipulation.

That the case only came to light through the copy a press officer kept on his own shows how far the information depended on individual will against the official archive.
