Congressman Eric Burlison (R-MO), member of the House Oversight and Government Reform Committee and of the Task Force on the Declassification of Federal Secrets, opened in May 2026 a formal congressional investigation against FFRDC contractors (Federally Funded Research and Development Centers). On May 22, 2026 he sent MITRE Corporation legislative interrogatories and production requests demanding UAP records since 1930 — including custody, control, analysis, transfer, destruction or withholding of recovered materials, technologies of unknown origin, and legacy crash-retrieval and reverse-engineering programs. Official U.S. Air Force (USAF) program between March 1952 and December 1969, direct successor of Project Sign (1947–1949) and Project Grudge (1949–1952). Operated from the Air Technical Intelligence Center at Wright-Patterson AFB (Dayton, Ohio), it archived 12,618 reports; ~701 (5.5%) remained catalogued as 'unidentified' after official investigation. On the night of 29 December 1980, Betty Cash, Vickie Landrum and her grandson watched a glowing diamond-shaped object radiating heat near Huffman, Texas, escorted by some 23 military helicopters. All three developed symptoms consistent with ionizing radiation, documented in hospital, and sued the federal government.

On the night of 19 September 1961, Betty and Barney Hill reported being followed by a light near Lancaster, New Hampshire, and, under later hypnosis with psychiatrist Benjamin Simon, recounted an abduction. Pease AFB logged a correlated radar return in Project Blue Book; Simon himself judged the memories to be fantasy, not recall.

Prospective Special Access Program (PSAP) proposed to DHS around 2011, derived from the DIA's AAWSAP/AATIP and led by Dr. Jim Lacatski. It proposed to study UFO technology, interview witnesses and hold recovered materials — but was terminated on February 10, 2012 without being approved, unfunded and never receiving any material. Declassified by DHS in 2023 and officially documented by AARO.

In October-November 2024, journalist Michael Shellenberger presented to Congress a 12-page document describing 'Immaculate Constellation', an alleged unacknowledged Special Access Program (uSAP) to collect and hold high-resolution UAP imagery. In 2025 analyst Matthew Brown identified himself as its author, but a later critical analysis (Jason Colavito, the Metabunk forum) argues Brown misread a fictional planning document from the 2018 Schriever space wargame as a real program — today's best-supported mundane explanation.

Secret study by the UK Ministry of Defence's Defence Intelligence Staff ('Unidentified Aerial Phenomena in the UK Air Defence Region'), completed in 2000 and declassified in 2006 via FOIA. It concluded UAP are real but with no evidence of non-human origin or hostile intent — and attributed many to poorly understood atmospheric plasmas ('buoyant plasmas').

On March 8, 2024, AARO published Volume 1 of its 'Report on the Historical Record of U.S. Government Involvement with UAP'. After reviewing the 1945–2023 period, it concluded it found no evidence that any official investigation confirmed extraterrestrial technology or reverse-engineering programs — attributing the beliefs to misidentifications, bureaucratic confusion and circular reporting. It is the corpus's strongest skeptical institutional anchor.

'Scientific Study of Unidentified Flying Objects' (1968), led by physicist Edward Condon at the University of Colorado with USAF funding. Its conclusion —that studying UFOs offers no scientific value— closed Project Blue Book in 1969. But its credibility was damaged: the 'Low memo' revealed a design bias, and roughly a third of cases remained unexplained despite the conclusion.

Geological engineer Phil Schneider claimed in lectures (1995–96) to have survived a 1979 firefight against non-human beings in an underground base beneath Dulce (New Mexico), with ~60 dead. On August 15, 1950, Nick Mariana, manager of a Great Falls (Montana) baseball team, filmed in 16 mm two silvery objects moving over the stadium — one of the earliest films of an unidentified aerial phenomenon. The USAF (Project Grudge/Blue Book) and the Robertson Panel (CIA, 1953) attributed it to reflections from two F-94 jets; independent analyst Robert Baker concluded the motion and brightness did not fit that explanation and left it unresolved. Mariana maintained the Air Force returned the reel without the first ~35 frames, the sharpest. Tier B: real film, disputed object.

Before dawn on April 17, 1966, officers Dale Spaur and Wilbur Neff chased a luminous object with a downward light beam from Portage County (Ohio) to Conway (Pennsylvania): about 138 km across two states, with two more officers joining. Major Hector Quintanilla's Project Blue Book dispatched it as the Echo satellite and then Venus, after a two-minute phone call; it took congressional pressure for him to travel and interview them. J. Allen Hynek recorded the handling. Multiple police witnesses, poor institutional handling: Tier A.

In the early hours of November 4, 1957, two sentries at Fort Itaipu, on the São Paulo coast, reportedly saw a circular orange object about 30 meters across descend, emitting a hum and a wave of heat that burned their clothing and skin, with an electrical blackout at the fort. The case was publicized by physician and ufologist Olavo Fontes (APRO) and appears in the classic Brazilian file, but its primary documentation is disputed: a colonel who claimed to be the commander called it a 'legend'. A Tier B case: striking physical effects, contested sources.

In October–November 1975, unidentified objects repeatedly penetrated the airspace of several Strategic Air Command (SAC) nuclear bases. At Loring AFB (Maine), a red object the size of a car overflew the nuclear weapons storage area on two consecutive nights; F-106 fighters scrambled without catching it. The pattern repeated at Wurtsmith, Malmstrom and Minot. The chain of OSI messages to the National Military Command Center speaks of an 'unknown entity'; NORAD confirmed radar returns. The USAF closed the case as 'unidentified helicopters'. Tier A: official documentation, radar, multiple bases.

The so-called 'other Roswell': the claim that in March 1948 a 99-foot saucer with 16 humanoid bodies crashed near Aztec, New Mexico, and was recovered by the military. Journalist Frank Scully published it in 'Behind the Flying Saucers' (1950). In the mid-1950s it was exposed as a hoax by two con men, Silas Newton and Leo GeBauer.

On 3 August 1965, road-accident investigator Rex Heflin took four Polaroid photographs of a hat-shaped object over a road in Santa Ana (California); his radio failed during the sighting. Days later, two men claiming to be from NORAD took three originals and never returned them. Later analyses ruled out a model suspended by a string.

Full-day public forum convened by the Disclosure Foundation on June 25, 2026 in the Kennedy Caucus Room of the Russell Senate Office Building, Washington D.C. Under the banner 'Humanity at the Edge of Discovery', it gathered six sitting legislators — Senators Kirsten Gillibrand (D-NY) and Mike Rounds (R-SD), authors of the main UAP provisions in the NDAA, and Representatives Anna Paulina Luna (R-FL), Eric Burlison (R-MO), Tim Burchett (R-TN) and Suhas Subramanyam (D-VA) — alongside Christopher Mellon (former Deputy Assistant Secretary of Defense for Intelligence), Avi Loeb (Harvard, chair of the White House UAP Science Advisory Council), retired Rear Admiral Tim Gallaudet, Harold Puthoff (EarthTech International, former director of the CIA/DIA STARGATE program), historian Carlos Eire (Yale), and researchers from MIT and the Harvard Kennedy School. It is the largest post-PURSUE public assembly of legislative, military, intelligence-legacy, and academic figures on UAP since the first releases of the war.gov/ufo portal in May–June 2026.

Around late June 2026, in connection with the Washington D.C. Disclosure Forum, Representative Anna Paulina Luna (R-FL), chair of the House Oversight Committee's UAP Task Force, announced that lawmakers are working with the White House to grant immunity to a list of whistleblowers who claim to have information about alleged recovered non-human craft and 'biologics'. The stated goal is to shield them from losing their security clearance and from the Espionage Act so they can divulge. A former Pentagon analyst suggested the mechanism could take the form of an executive order. It is not material evidence of the phenomenon: it is a procedural mechanism —the lever that could turn private claims into formal testimony— over claims the Pentagon denies.

In early 2026, Aldo Rebelo —former Minister of Defense of Brazil (2015-2016) and presidential pre-candidate for the Christian Democracy party— publicly stated that he is aware of Brazilian Armed Forces documents about UFOs and promised to release them, tying the gesture to the declassification wave in the United States. In a long interview with documentarian Jesse Michels (American Alchemy), and in statements reported by CNN Brasil and Metrópoles, Rebelo asserted that the 1996 Varginha incident was real —a crashed craft and non-human beings— and recalled the 1986 Official UFO Night, with 21 radar-tracked objects and scrambled FAB fighter jets. It is the highest-ranking confirmation made publicly, but it is testimony by authority —not a document— and arrives as a presidential campaign promise.

In March 1952, Commander Edward J. Ruppelt — director of the Air Technical Intelligence Center (ATIC) Project Blue Book at Wright-Patterson AFB — gave a 'flying saucer' lecture to scientists at MIT Lincoln Laboratory (a FFRDC founded in 1951 at Hanscom AFB, Massachusetts). The talk was filmed and catalogued as 'AF-ATIC-FILM, 03/52.' The film remained in MIT Lincoln Lab's possession for 74 years. On June 24, 2026, Rep. Eric Burlison (R-MO) confirmed that MIT Lincoln Lab acknowledged the file's existence and agreed to hand it over to Congress. It is the first known film of an official USAF briefing on UAP/flying saucers to civilian defense contractors, made four months before the Washington D.C. 'Invasion of Washington' of July 1952.

File 62-HQ-83894 is the FBI's central 'flying discs' archive, opened in 1947 and fed through the 1970s with investigative reports, witness testimonies, press clippings and correspondence between the FBI and the Air Forces. PURSUE declassified its serials in the first release; this file embeds in its viewer a sample of Volume 1 (Sections 1-10, subfile SUB A and Serials 130, 153, 164, 220, 403, 438 and 449 (the heaviest sections were split into parts for the viewer)), investigative correspondence from the 1947 wave. The archive contains famous pieces —such as the 1950 Hottel memo on 'three saucers recovered', which the corpus treats separately— but its bulk is fieldwork that resolved most reports into balloons, hoaxes and misidentifications. Its value is institutional: it documents how the U.S. security apparatus processed the flying-disc panic, not that the discs were anomalous.

Five documents declassified in PURSUE Release 03 (June 12, 2026) portraying the founding years of the U.S. military study of 'flying discs' (1948-1953): a Navy Report of Flying Discs (Fifth Naval District, Norfolk, Dec 1948), an Army Flying Saucer Study (Army Field Forces, 1949), the USAF 'Analysis of Flying Objects in the United States' in 'Check-List UFO' format (objects 1-172, the Sign/Grudge era), and the 1953 internal transmission of the CIA scientific panel report —the Robertson Panel—, which steered official policy toward public 'debunking'. Eighteen CIA documents declassified in PURSUE Release 03 (June 12, 2026) portraying the Agency's dual role toward UFOs: steering U.S. policy and collecting foreign intelligence. On the night of May 20, 1957, USAF Lieutenant Milton Torres scrambled from RAF Manston (Kent) in an F-86D with orders to fire a full salvo of 24 rockets at a stationary radar target over East Anglia that ground control had been tracking for some time. Torres locked on at 24 km to an echo 'with the proportions of a flying aircraft carrier'; before he could fire, the object moved at a speed he estimated at Mach 10 and vanished from radar. The next day a man in civilian clothes ordered him to keep silent; Torres spoke only decades later, when the UK MoD declassified the file in 2008.

Before dawn on September 24, 1959, police officer Robert Dickerson saw a bright object descend over Redmond, Oregon, and hover at about 60 meters, with the treetops lit up. He alerted the FAA office at the airport; the controllers observed it and the Klamath Falls GCI radar tracked it, after which six F-102 fighters were scrambled and a B-47 and an F-89 on routine flights joined the pursuit. Radar followed the object for about two hours, with altitude changes between 1,500 and 15,800 meters. The Air Force wavered between 'Venus,' 'a balloon' and 'insufficient data.'

At dusk on October 14, 1976, thousands of Seoul residents saw more than a dozen luminous objects advancing in a semicircular formation over the city; when the group entered the restricted airspace over the Blue House (Cheong Wa Dae), the presidential residence, the air-defense units surrounding downtown opened fire. Thousands of rounds were fired; one person died and 31 were injured by falling ordnance. The official explanation — a U.S. freighter that strayed into the zone — was contradicted by the fact that the plane landed intact in Tokyo, never fired upon.

On 16 December 2017, The New York Times ran on its front page 'Glowing Auras and "Black Money": The Pentagon's Mysterious U.F.O. Program' (bylined Helene Cooper, Ralph Blumenthal and Leslie Kean), revealing the Advanced Aerospace Threat Identification Program (AATIP): a Department of Defense program funded with ~US$22 million between 2007 and 2012, pushed by Senator Harry Reid, with contracts to Bigelow Aerospace. The same day, To The Stars Academy released two Navy videos (FLIR1/Nimitz and Gimbal) and Luis Elizondo surfaced as the former official who claimed to have run it. It was the event that made UAP mainstream and chained into the UAPTF (2020) and the ODNI report (2021).

On December 22, 2010 —two days before Christmas Eve— the New Zealand Defence Force (NZDF) released twelve volumes, roughly 2,500 pages, of Royal New Zealand Air Force (RNZAF) UFO files dating back to 1952: nearly sixty years of reports from civilian witnesses, military personnel and pilots, including the material documenting the famous 1978 'Kaikōura Lights' (see [[kaikoura-1978]]). The release came after two years of lobbying by researcher Suzanne Hansen, director of UFOCUS NZ, via an Official Information Act request. It was, at once, the largest UFO declassification by an Oceania country and a textbook case of the limits of a 'complete' release: it only covered the Air Force —the Navy and Army kept their own records classified—, with privacy embargoes running until 2050 and entire pages illegible due to redaction.

Following a wave of sightings in 1978, Prime Minister Giulio Andreotti designated the Aeronautica Militare (Italian Air Force) as the institutional body responsible for receiving and investigating UFO reports in Italy. Decades of files accumulated under 'Secret'/'Reserved' stamps stayed closed until journalists Lao Petrilli and Vincenzo Sinapi gained access to them for the book 'UFO: I dossier italiani' (March 2014), revealing previously unpublished cases —including a radar contact confirmed by a C-130 at Grazzanise (2005)—.
