Peer-reviewed paper in Nature Scientific Reports (Oct 2025) by Bruehl and Villarroel. Dataset of 2,718 days (Nov 19, 1949 to Apr 28, 1957, fully pre-Sputnik) with transients identified on Palomar Observatory Sky Survey plates. Two statistically significant associations: transients are 45% more likely within ±1 day of a nuclear test (p=0.008) and for each additional same-day UAP report there are 8.5% more transients identified (p=0.015). It is the strongest peer-reviewed correlation in the corpus between nuclear activity, UAP records of the era and independent astronomical observations.

Strong evidence: instrumental sensor record + multiple witnesses (typically military). Three independent axes: the «tier» measures the strength of the evidence; the «probability» estimates how genuinely unexplained the case is —a natural phenomenon can remain unexplained, so it does not equal «non-prosaic»—; and the partition of explanations (below) says what it most plausibly was. So a well-documented case can have a possible hoax as its most plausible cause, and a Tier B is not, for that reason, a hoax.

The file in question
POSS-I (Palomar Observatory Sky Survey, first campaign) is the first systematic photographic mapping of the northern hemisphere night sky, conducted by the Mount Palomar Observatory between 1949 and 1958 with the 48-inch Schmidt telescope. The campaign captured thousands of archival plates that today enable pixel-by-pixel comparison with modern CCD surveys.
Since 2019, astrophysicist Beatriz Villarroel (Nordita / Stockholm University / IAC Canarias) leads the VASCO project (Vanishing & Appearing Sources during a Century of Observations) on these plates. In 2021 she published in Nature Scientific Reports the first paper identifying nine point sources that appear within half an hour on an April 12, 1950 plate and are absent on prior, later and modern CCD surveys several magnitudes deeper. The critical question: no human satellite could generate those points —Sputnik launched in October 1957, 7 years later.
In October 2025, Bruehl and Villarroel published in Nature Scientific Reports the paper the corpus registers as the anchor case. They built a daily dataset of 2,718 days (Nov 19, 1949 to Apr 28, 1957, fully pre-Sputnik) crossing three sources: transients identified in POSS-I plates, public records of atmospheric nuclear detonations (Trinity follow-ups, Operation Greenhouse, Operation Buster-Jangle, etc.) and independent UAP reports of the era (Project Blue Book, declassified military archives). The statistical analysis showed two significant associations: transients are 45% more likely within a ±1 day window of a nuclear test (p=0.008), and for each additional independent UAP report on the same day there is an 8.5% increase in identified transients (p=0.015). The paper is carefully conservative in its interpretation: it documents correlation, does not assert causation, and explicitly enumerates competing hypotheses (plate contamination, search bias, radiation-induced atmospheric phenomenon, orbital artifacts predating 1957).
The strongest null hypothesis the scientific debate has set against VASCO's work is plate contamination: the POSS-I photographic emulsions were processed and stored for decades, and radioactive particles, developing defects, dust or near-Earth asteroids can produce spurious points that mimic 'transients'. That these artifacts appear closer to nuclear-test dates —when the atmosphere and the laboratories themselves handled more radioactive material— is a competing explanation requiring no object in the sky at all. The team has tried to address this: the independent replication published on arXiv introduces the so-called 'Earth Shadow Deficit' as a selection-bias control — the idea that genuine reflective objects in orbit should become scarce when they enter Earth's shadow, a pattern plate noise should not exhibit. The effect size, in any case, is modest, and none of the authors claims to have proven the existence of physical objects; what the corpus registers is the quality of the apparatus, not the strength of the conclusion.
Part 02
Why this case moved the needle
It is the corpus's anchor case for rigorous peer-reviewed scientific evidence on the UAP phenomenon. Structurally comparable to the Battelle Special Report 1952 (Blue Book statistics) and the Rommel Report 1980 (federal, skeptical, rigorous): published paper, reproducible dataset, auditable methodology, explicit confidence intervals. Its importance is threefold. First, it is pre-Sputnik: it removes the 'human satellite' hypothesis that quickly closes post-1957 correlations. Second, it articulates the historical nuclear–UAP line (Malmstrom 1967, Loring 1975, Hessdalen) with a quantitative datum independent of military testimony. Third, it comes from professional astronomy, not UAP research: corroboration would be stronger coming from a different methodological domain. Its limits are sharp too: correlation is not causation, the effect size is modest, competing hypotheses (plate contamination, search bias) are on the table. Tier S not for the strength of the conclusion, but for the quality of the evidential apparatus: peer review in Nature SR, public data, code and plates accessible for replication.
