Institutional evidence: multiple verifiable witnesses or official documentation. Three independent axes: the «tier» measures the strength of the evidence; the «probability» estimates how genuinely unexplained the case is —a natural phenomenon can remain unexplained, so it does not equal «non-prosaic»—; and the partition of explanations (below) says what it most plausibly was. So a well-documented case can have a possible hoax as its most plausible cause, and a Tier B is not, for that reason, a hoax.

Deception Island, an active volcanic caldera in the South Shetland Islands, was during the Cold War a point of sovereign friction: Argentines, Chileans and British maintained scientific-military bases within short distance of one another, in an overlap of Antarctic claims. That context —three watchful, mutually distrustful detachments in a single enclave— is what gives the episode weight. In the preceding weeks moving colored lights had been reported over the Antarctic sky; the British station received notice of sightings seen from the Argentine station on June 7 and 20.
On July 3, 1965, in the austral polar night, personnel from the neighboring bases —the Argentine one (Decepción), the Chilean one (Pedro Aguirre Cerda) and the British one (Falkland Islands Dependencies Survey)— observed a luminous, multicolored object moving and changing direction for several minutes. The Argentine Navy detachment took photographs of the object. The most cited element is the instrumental component: two meteorologists observed a round bluish-white body and, per the records, two variometers registered sudden disturbances of the magnetic field at the moment of the sighting, traced onto their tapes. It is worth being precise about the official reading of that datum: Captain José María Cohen, of the Argentine Navy, later stated that the magnetic variations registered on Deception Island's instruments did not exceed the limits of normal variation — a nuance the popular narrative of the case tends to omit.
What is institutionally notable is that, days later, the Argentine government issued an official communiqué acknowledging the episode as an unidentified aerial phenomenon, one of the first formal governmental acknowledgments of a sighting in any country and exceptional for the era. The file even appears in CIA documentation and was treated in the indirect physical evidence section of the Condon Report itself. The convergence of three nations with separate bases, without prior coordination and at the height of the Cold War, together with the photograph and the instrumental record, places it among the best-supported Antarctic cases. It enters the corpus as a multi-national Tier A.

It is one of the few cases with explicit official governmental acknowledgment of the era, and exceptional for the independent tri-national corroboration (Argentina, Chile, United Kingdom) in a controlled environment with no civilian population to muddle the report. The analytical value lies in the witness structure: three rival states in a sovereignty dispute, with no incentive to coordinate a common version, recording the same phenomenon. It adds a photograph and an instrumental record (variometers) that is what distinguishes the case from a purely visual sighting. The official Argentine communiqué further makes it an institutional datum, not just an observation.
Editorial honesty requires weighing the skeptical counterweight. First, the Argentine Navy itself (Capt. Cohen) rated the magnetic variations as within normal limits, which weakens the instrumental component the case's legend tends to magnify. Second, the Antarctic latitude and the mid-austral-winter date make unusual astronomical or atmospheric stimuli plausible —bright planets, refraction, polar light phenomena— in long-night skies. Third, the 1965 instrumentation (theodolite and low-resolution photography) has far less discriminating capacity than a modern multi-sensor military system. Tier A for the multi-witness convergence of three states plus instrumental record plus official acknowledgment; not Tier S precisely because that record, read rigorously, does not rule out a prosaic stimulus.

This case is classified among the model's hypotheses: the bar splits 100% by how much each explanation weighs (the uncertainty is spread across the hypotheses the case supports). Summed across the corpus they produce the comparable partition. It is a different question from the Probability above: that one estimates how likely the case is a genuinely unexplained phenomenon; this one splits which the explanation would be.
