Al día siguiente un hombre de civil le ordenó silencio; Torres habló recién décadas después, cuando el MoD británico desclasificó el expediente en 2008.On the night of May 20, 1957, USAF Lieutenant Milton Torres scrambled from RAF Manston (Kent) in an F-86D with orders to fire a full salvo of 24 rockets at a stationary radar target over East Anglia that ground control had been tracking for some time. Torres locked on at 24 km to an echo 'with the proportions of a flying aircraft carrier'; before he could fire, the object moved at a speed he estimated at Mach 10 and vanished from radar. The next day a man in civilian clothes ordered him to keep silent; Torres spoke only decades later, when the UK MoD declassified the file in 2008.

Strong evidence: instrumental sensor record + multiple witnesses (typically military). Three independent axes: the «tier» measures the strength of the evidence; the «probability» estimates how genuinely unexplained the case is —a natural phenomenon can remain unexplained, so it does not equal «non-prosaic»—; and the partition of explanations (below) says what it most plausibly was. So a well-documented case can have a possible hoax as its most plausible cause, and a Tier B is not, for that reason, a hoax.

In May 1957, East Anglia was one of the most militarized skies on the planet: an extraordinary density of USAF and RAF bases, early-warning radars and fighters on reaction alert against the Soviet bomber threat. That night, two F-86D Sabres were on five-minute alert at the south end of the runway at RAF Manston, Kent. The ground intercept control had for some time been tracking a radar echo that orbited the region with anomalous behavior: it stayed motionless for long intervals, something no aircraft of the era could do. With the normal identification procedures exhausted, the target was classified unidentified and the scramble was ordered.
Vectored by the GCI, Lieutenant Milton Torres — 25 years old, a fighter pilot — was directed onto the contact. The order he received was unusually blunt: fire a full salvo of his 24 Mighty Mouse rockets at the target. Torres later described the echo on his own onboard radar as something 'with the proportions of a flying aircraft carrier': a huge, solid, stationary return. He obtained a lock almost immediately, at exactly 24 km (15 miles), with the gunsight system ready for automatic launch. In the instant before firing, the object moved. Torres watched it break the lock and sweep across the screen at a speed he estimated at no less than Mach 10 — on the order of 11,000 km/h — before disappearing off the radar's range. He returned to Manston without having fired.
What followed is the part that makes the case corpus material. The next day, by Torres's consistent account, a man in civilian clothes — who vaguely identified himself as being from an American agency — interrogated him, warned him the incident was classified and that speaking of it would cost him his career. Torres kept silent for roughly thirty years. The episode surfaced when the UK Ministry of Defence began, in 2008, the public release of its UFO files accumulated over half a century; among them was documentation of RAF radar reports of the era that framed the account. Torres — by then an engineering professor in the United States — gave firm testimony, in writing and on the record, ratifying the episode with name, date and base.

Manston is the case where the state does not merely observe but decides to open fire: the order to launch a full salvo of rockets at the target is itself the best measure of how real the contact was to the era's air command. You do not order 24 rockets spent over populated East Anglia on an atmospheric anomaly; you order it when ground radar, having exhausted the identification procedures, treats the echo as a hostile intruder. That the object broke the lock and disappeared at an estimated Mach 10 fixes the same impossible-for-the-era kinematic profile that recurs at Ellsworth, Haneda and the RB-47: stationary and then an acceleration beyond any known inventory.
The case also weighs for its atypical chain of custody. Unlike a rumor, here three layers hold each other up: the named, recorded testimony of an identifiable pilot with a subsequent career as an engineer; the documented existence of the file in the MoD's 2008 release; and the verifiable operational context of the USAF reaction alert at Manston. The silence warning from the man in civilian clothes — the documented institutional cover-up pattern this corpus tracks — explains why an episode of this gravity took thirty years to surface, and why much of the historical record is structurally biased toward underreporting. The case's weakness is honest and must be named: the interceptor's contact was radar-only, without visual acquisition, which leaves anomalous propagation as a stronger mundane candidate than in a radar-visual case; but a stationary echo of the reported size that then accelerates to Mach 10 is precisely the kind of return anomalous propagation does not produce.

Distribución de explicacionesDistribution of explanations
This case is classified among the model's hypotheses: the bar splits 100% by how much each explanation weighs (the uncertainty is spread across the hypotheses the case supports). Summed across the corpus they produce the comparable partition. It is a different question from the Probability above: that one estimates how likely the case is a genuinely unexplained phenomenon; this one splits which the explanation would be.
