At dusk on October 14, 1976, thousands of Seoul residents saw more than a dozen luminous objects advancing in a semicircular formation over the city; when the group entered the restricted airspace over the Blue House (Cheong Wa Dae), the presidential residence, the air-defense units surrounding downtown opened fire. Thousands of rounds were fired; one person died and 31 were injured by falling ordnance. The official explanation — a U.S. freighter that strayed into the zone — was contradicted by the fact that the plane landed intact in Tokyo, never fired upon.

Institutional evidence: multiple verifiable witnesses or official documentation. Three independent axes: the «tier» measures the strength of the evidence; the «probability» estimates how genuinely unexplained the case is —a natural phenomenon can remain unexplained, so it does not equal «non-prosaic»—; and the partition of explanations (below) says what it most plausibly was. So a well-documented case can have a possible hoax as its most plausible cause, and a Tier B is not, for that reason, a hoax.

On the afternoon of October 14, 1976, between six and eight, dusk was falling over Seoul when thousands of residents of the Gangbuk area, north of the Han River, began pointing at the sky. More than a dozen luminous objects — described as bright lights moving at constant speed, in a semicircular or wedge formation — advanced slowly southward over the city. It was not an isolated point or a reflection: it was an ordered group of lights over a capital of several million people, in plain sight.

The trajectory carried the formation toward the restricted airspace protecting the Blue House (Cheong Wa Dae), the residence and office of the president — then Park Chung-hee — one of the strictest exclusion zones in the country. In 1976 Seoul's defenses were at maximum tension: barely two months earlier, the Panmunjom axe murder incident had brought the peninsula to the brink of war, and the anti-aircraft systems ringing the capital were primed to answer any intrusion from the north. When the group of lights penetrated the restricted zone, several batteries opened fire at will. Thousands of anti-aircraft rounds were fired over the city sky. The ordnance that went up came back down over the neighborhoods: one person died and thirty-one were injured by fragments and stray bullets — the only known UAP episode in South Korea with casualties caused by the military response itself.

The explanation offered at the time was that the 'Blue House UFO' had been a U.S. cargo plane that had strayed into the exclusion zone, and that the anti-aircraft fire was aimed at it. But the account did not hold: the freighter to which the incident was attributed landed undamaged in Tokyo and had never been fired upon, so whatever Seoul's batteries fired at remained unidentified. The case was suppressed for decades — the country was living under an authoritarian regime with strict press control — and only returned to public discussion when MBC's investigative program 'Geuseosi Algo Sipda' (I Want to Know It) devoted a special to it, aired on November 7, 2020, gathering testimony and period clippings.

Seoul 1976 is the case that fixes South Korea on the corpus's institutional map, and it does so in the most forceful way possible: not with a reported sighting, but with a state opening live fire on the object, with fatalities. The military response is, in this corpus's logic, the best measure of how real the contact was to the command that ordered the shooting. You do not order an anti-aircraft barrage over a densely populated capital — with the guaranteed cost of ordnance falling on the neighborhoods — over a reflection or a planet: you order it when the defense system treats the formation as a hostile intruder inside the presidential exclusion zone. The peninsula in October 1976, weeks after the Panmunjom axe murder incident, was exactly the setting where an unidentified intrusion was read as an imminent threat from the north.

The analytical value lies in the residue. The adversary narrative — a North Korean or Soviet reconnaissance incursion over Seoul — is the first operational hypothesis and the one that explains the reaction, but it collides with the reported morphology: a dozen lights in a semicircular formation at constant speed does not match the profile of a combat aircraft or a drone of the era. And the official explanation — a strayed U.S. freighter — collapses on its own: that plane landed intact in Tokyo and was never fired upon, so the account meant to close the case left the object unidentified and exposed the cover-up pattern the corpus tracks. Seoul 1976 also completes the Korean map: the corpus already had North Korea with Wonsan-Sunchon (Korean War), and now incorporates the South with its best-documented military episode, rescued from the silence of the authoritarian era by investigative journalism four decades later.

This case is classified among the model's hypotheses: the bar splits 100% by how much each explanation weighs (the uncertainty is spread across the hypotheses the case supports). Summed across the corpus they produce the comparable partition. It is a different question from the Probability above: that one estimates how likely the case is a genuinely unexplained phenomenon; this one splits which the explanation would be.
