Biography

Australia's leading UFO researcher, with a background in chemistry and mathematics (University of New England) and five decades of fieldwork. He was the Australian representative of APRO (1978–1986) and MUFON state representative for New South Wales (1976–1993), and a contributing editor of the International UFO Reporter. His distinctive contribution is documentary and institutional: he was the first civilian researcher allowed to review the Royal Australian Air Force (RAAF) UFO files, work he synthesized in his book 'The Oz Files: The Australian UFO Story' (1996). He represents the rigorous, archival wing of Australian ufology, attentive to the difference between the documented case and the legend.

Some 300 students and teachers at Westall High School in Melbourne watched a silver object land in daylight on an adjacent paddock, leave a circle in the grass and depart — pursued, according to witnesses, by RAAF aircraft; the subsequent administrative suppression was documented by the education department.

Disappearance of Frederick Valentich· 1978

On 21 October 1978, the 20-year-old Australian pilot Frederick Valentich disappeared in a Cessna 182 over Bass Strait, en route to King Island. Minutes earlier he told Melbourne control that an aircraft was passing over him at about 300 m, with four bright lights, that 'it is not an aircraft' and that his engine was failing; after a metallic sound, the communication cut off. Neither he nor the plane was ever found. It is one of Australia's most famous cases, though its only 'evidence' is the radio transcript.
