On the morning of June 26, 1971, at Braeside farm near Fort Beaufort (Eastern Cape, South Africa), a farm laborer noticed a 'fireball' about 0.76 m across at treetop height. The owner, Bennie Smit, fired eight shots at the object with no visible effect.
Police arrived: sergeant Piet Kitching and station commander P.R. van Rensburg also fired. According to witnesses, the object changed color and eventually took on the appearance of a gunmetal-grey, oval, 200-liter-drum shape. Six Fort Beaufort town councillors watched the episode through binoculars, and nine imprints —described as landing-gear marks— were found on hard clay.
The case was covered by international press. The Grahamstown army regiment was reported to have investigated the site, but the institution could not —or would not— provide records of the event. That is the case's epistemic line: multiple institutional witnesses (police, town council) and a physical trace, but no sensor data and no formal military report to back it.
