Death of critical witnesses

Captain Thomas Mantell died when his F-51 crashed after he chased a bright object above the aircraft's safe operational ceiling without oxygen: the first documented US military fatality in pursuit of an unidentified object.

Between 1977 and 1978, residents of Colares island (Pará) endured hundreds of nightly encounters with luminous objects projecting vertical beams, producing medically documented geometric burns and anemia. The Brazilian Air Force ran Operação Prato for fourteen months and officially acknowledged the case in 2010.

Brazilian Army operation in January 1996, one or more non-human creatures reported by civilians, soldier Marco Eli Cherese dead six weeks later from atypical bacterial infection. Thirty years later, the case remains politically alive: Brazilian witnesses testified behind closed doors in the U.S. Congress (Longworth, Jan 2026), a Brazilian neurosurgeon described a lilac-eyed entity, James Fox and Leslie Kean hosted the 30th-anniversary press conference at the National Press Club (Jan 2026), the Brazilian Superior Tribunal Militar dismissed the case as 'error and rumor' (Jan 2026), and the bipartisan Capitol press conference of Jun 9, 2026 specifically called to declassify Varginha records.

In late May 2026, retired USAF Major General Donald McCasland —former director of the Air Force Research Laboratory at Wright-Patterson, the base historically associated with custody of UAP material— was reported missing in Ohio. His name appears in the 2016 leaked Podesta emails, and the disappearance coincided with the acceleration of AARO's releases.

Between January 28 and February 4, 2023, a high-altitude Chinese-origin balloon overflew the continental United States from Alaska, passing over nuclear installations in Montana (Malmstrom Air Force Base, Minuteman III silos), descending southeast until shot down on February 4 by an AIM-9X Sidewinder missile launched by an F-22 Raptor at 60,000 feet over the Atlantic coast of South Carolina. The Biden administration and DoD officially confirmed it was an intelligence platform (SIGINT/PHOTINT). Partial recovery of mechanical, electronic and payload parts was executed by the U.S. Navy (USS Carter Hall, USS Oscar Austin) and the FBI for analysis. It is the corpus's first case of officially confirmed adversary technology operating over the continental United States in the post-2017 UAP cycle, and opens the adversary-technology narrative with the strongest possible evidential basis.

On November 23, 1953, an F-89C Scorpion fighter took off from Kinross AFB to intercept an unidentified radar return over Lake Superior. Ground radar showed the aircraft and the target merge into a single blip — and the F-89, with Lt. Felix Moncla and radar operator Robert Wilson, vanished without a trace. Neither the aircraft nor the bodies were ever found.

In June 1947, days before Kenneth Arnold's sighting, Harold Dahl and Fred Crisman claimed to have seen six doughnut-shaped objects over Maury Island (Washington); one supposedly dropped metallic slag that injured his son and killed his dog. Dahl said he was visited by a 'man in black' who warned him to stay quiet. Two intelligence officers died when the B-25 carrying the 'samples' crashed. The FBI rated it a hoax — and Dahl himself admitted he would call it a fraud. It is the foundational case of the 'men in black' myth.

According to an account attributed to a former U.S. National Security Agency (NSA) analyst, in March 1967 two MiG-21s of the Cuban Air Force were sent to intercept an unidentified object; one was supposedly destroyed in mid-air as it prepared to fire, and the loss was logged as 'equipment malfunction'. The story, collected by NICAP, rests on a single source and the NSA never confirmed it. It is Cuba's case in the corpus — and an example of the fragility of single-source accounts.

Geological engineer Phil Schneider claimed in lectures (1995–96) to have survived a 1979 firefight against non-human beings in an underground base beneath Dulce (New Mexico), with ~60 dead. He displayed scars as 'proof'. His credentials were never verified and there is no documentary evidence of the base or the incident. He died in 1996, officially by suicide, with forensic inconsistencies that fed suspicions of murder. He is the archetype of the uncorroborated underground-base (DUMB) 'insider witness'.
